Description
We will be fishing the Atlantic Outfitters Manhasset Bay Kayak Fishing Tournament. This is a FUN tournament so you do not need to fish competitively and the tournament is free.

For information on this tournament click here: http://kfa-ny.org/forum/showthread.p...tember-24-2011

At this time, it appears we will be able to get a nice spread of fish on this trip. There are some schoolie bass with a few nice size bass mixed in as well as some blues.

Directions
Take LIE (495) to Exit 36, Searingtown Road (101)
Take Searingtown Road (becomes Port Washington Blvd) North for four miles.
Make a Left onto Main Street.
Follow Main Street for 1 1/2 Miles to the waterfront.
You will pass Town Dock
Make the first Right into Inspiration Wharf.
Atlantic Outfitters is the tall gray building at the entrance to the Wharf.

Fishing
Striped Bass: The stripers will be found holding on tight to shoreline structure (eg - docks, piers, submerged boulders) in water 6' to 12'. Since the bass are so tight to structure, T & W is the best bet. I suggest that you troll the bay in a circle. Usually, you will be rewarded if you do this. The best striper fishing has been historically inside the harbor. However, there is also good striper fishing outside of Plum Point (west) in the Long Island Sound. The best fishing will be from Plum Point to Barkers Point. There is a massive boulder field at Barkers Point. Most stripers will be from 18" to 29".

Bluefish: The bluefish numbers inside Manhasset Bay have been lower the last couple of years, but there is always a chance at getting a chopper both inside and outside the bay (the winning bluefish in 2009 was 39" and caught inside the bay in the backbay flats). For the blues inside the bay, I recommend the north side of the harbor from Toms Point to Plum Point. Also, the back of the bay is an excellent bluefish spot during a flood tide, and the beginning of outgoing, as peanut bunker and silversides stack up in the back of the bay. For this fishing, use poppers and swimmers and look for crashing blues. If you are a fly fisherman, a peanut bunker pattern can be killer here. Outside the bay, try locating blues by trolling from Plum Point to Barkers Point. The bluefish are more likely to be found in open water between the two points.

Baitfish
At this time, Manhasset the stripers will be feeding on snappers, peanut bunker, and silversides. There may be adult menhaden in the open sound or near the mouth of the bay, but the menhaden are usually gone by the middle of the summer most seasons.

Bait & Tackle
Atlantic Outfitters has a fully loaded bait shop, and extensive fly fishing gear as well. John will be selling sandworms for the tournament. Another option is Duffy's B & T in Glenwood Landing, who has the best worms east of Jack's in City Island!

Some suggested items to bring are:

Landing net
